To Yorkshire or not to Yorkshire. That is the question…..

In the words of Johnny Mathis, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in Sherborne. Twinkly Christmas trees have gone up all around the town, there’s a nativity scene in the Conduit. Father Christmas is probably picking the lint off his red suit as I write for his guest appearance at the Post Office.

Meanwhile, food as ever is the main topic of conversation in the office. Having successfully pulled off her special roast potatoes in Fussels Fine Food rapeseed oil, Katie is now intent on mastering the next thing on her Christmas Day menu  – Yorkshire Puddings. Eh, I hear you cry (or at least that’s what I did). Yorkshire puds on Christmas Day? Whatever next: mint sauce and turkey? Apple sauce and turkey? Surely this Yorkshire delicacy should be reserved for roast beef alone.

Well, it seems like I’m in the minority. A quick straw poll of the office showed that Yorkshire puds had their place at the Christmas dinner table as much as roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and Brussel sprouts. Shaken as I am by this news, I can see the logic – it is a roast when all is said and done, and if you like a Yorkshire pudding, tradition should be swept aside in the name of progress. Joanne’s from Leeds so it should stand to reason that Yorkshires would feature on her Christmas Day menu but while she says she doesn’t serve them herself, she knows many, many people who do. But it doesn’t sit easily with me. What do you reckon? To Yorkshire or not to Yorkshire? That is the question….
